This painting has always been a favorite of mine, for several reasons.
First, during my professional diving days, I was a Safety Diver in the Warner Bros film “Free Willy 2”. It was an incredible experience to see what it would be like to be so close to these majestic animals.
Second, “Salmon Hunter” was included in a Northlight book “The Best of Wildlife Art,” was cover art for “Wildlife Art” magazine, the cetacean journal ‘‘Orcas in Our Midst,” and a Biology textbook, published by McGraw-Hill and the National Geographic Society.
Third, I was just thrilled with how well it turned out. Between my experiences diving in habitats where a scene like this would take place and having a salmon on ice for a week next to my easel. Therefore, juxtaposing real life elements into a conceptual scene.
